AI agent app glossary

Plain definitions of the terms used across this site, from agent levels to the labels on each fact.

Acts on your behalf

An agent level: the app takes actions in other services or the real world for you, such as booking, buying, sending a message or adding to your calendar.

AI agent app

A mobile app that does part of a task for you instead of only answering. On this site that means it either plans and carries out a task in several steps, or takes actions in other services for you.

What is an AI agent app?

Assistant

An AI app that answers questions and makes suggestions but does not carry out the task itself. We list assistants and label them “Assistant”, so you can tell them apart from agents.

AI agent vs AI assistant

Confirmation step

Whether you approve an action before an app that acts on your behalf carries it out. Each profile says what the developer states: you confirm first, it can act without asking, the developer doesn’t say, or not yet checked.

Conflicting sources

Official sources disagree about a fact. We show the disagreement instead of picking one.

Developer states

A label on a fact that comes from the developer’s official website, store listing or policy page. We have not tested it ourselves.

What the labels mean

Freemium

The app can be used for free, with some features behind a paid plan. Limits of the free part vary by app and are listed on the profile when the developer states them.

Need

An everyday task that people want help with, such as “Plan a trip itinerary” or “Manage my email”. Apps are grouped by need, and a need gets its own comparison page when at least two apps can be compared.

All needs

Needs recheck

The last check of a fact is older than our refresh window, so it should be checked again before you rely on it.

Not yet verified

We could not find reliable information yet. It never means free, available everywhere or unsupported.

Observed

A label on a fact we saw ourselves, for example by installing the app on a real phone or opening the pricing page in a stated region.

Plans multi-step tasks

An agent level: the app works out and carries out a task in several steps inside the app, and adjusts when you change a constraint, for example a day-by-day trip plan.

Ref tag

Links to an app’s own website carry “?ref=magentscout”, so the developer can see the visit came from this site. It is the same for every visitor, carries no information about you, and we are not paid for it.

Privacy

Single-task tool

An app that does one AI task when asked, such as translating a sentence or removing a background. These are not listed here.

Subscription

The app is paid for by a recurring charge, usually monthly or yearly. Prices are shown only from an official pricing page, with currency, billing period and region.

Tested by us

A person on our team installed the app on a real phone and ran a written test script for the task it claims to handle. The profile shows the date, device and app version. Apps without this say “Not yet tested by us”.
