An AI agent app is a phone app that does part of a task for you instead of only answering. It either plans and carries out a task in several steps, or takes actions in other services for you, such as booking, sending or scheduling. Apps that answer and suggest but leave the doing to you are assistants.
Three levels, from answering to acting
On this site every app has one level, based on what its developer says it does:
| Level | What it does | Example task | Listed here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant | Answers questions and suggests; you carry out the task. | “Suggest a 3-day plan for Lisbon.” | 45 of 74 (61%) |
| Plans multi-step tasks | Works out and carries out a task in several steps inside the app, and adjusts when you change something. | Builds and revises a day-by-day itinerary. | 15 of 74 (20%) |
| Acts on your behalf | Takes actions in other services or the real world for you. | Books the hotel, sends the email, adds the meeting. | 14 of 74 (19%) |
Examples that act on your behalf: AIApply, Circle and Gondola. Examples that plan multi-step tasks: Akiflow, Albert and Consensus. Examples of assistants: Aira Explorer, Answer.AI and Babbel.
What an AI agent app is not
- A single-task tool. An app that translates a sentence or removes a photo background does one AI step when asked. Useful, but it doesn’t plan or act, and we don’t list these.
- Just a chat window. Chatting is how many agents take instructions, but an app that only replies in chat is an assistant, however good the replies are.
- Fully hands-off by default. Many agents ask you to confirm before they act. Whether they do is one of the most useful things to check.
How to tell from an app listing
- Look at the verbs. “Books”, “sends”, “schedules”, “submits”, “pays” suggest acting on your behalf. “Suggests”, “explains”, “drafts”, “answers” suggest an assistant.
- Check what it connects to. An app that acts for you usually needs access to another account, such as your calendar, email or a booking service.
- Find the confirmation step. Does the developer say you approve each action, or can it act on its own? If the listing doesn’t say, treat that as unknown.
- Separate claims from tests. A store description is the developer’s claim. On this site, facts say “Developer states” unless we saw them ourselves.
Why the level matters
The more an app does on its own, the more it can save you, and the more there is to check first: what it can access, what it costs and how to undo a mistake. If you are about to give an app access to an account, read Before you let an AI app act for you.
How levels are decided on this site
We read the developer’s official website and store listing, quote the passage that supports the level, and record the date we checked it. Each app’s page shows the level, its source and that date. Until we test an app on a real phone it says “Not yet tested by us”. Full methodology.
Quick answers
What is an AI agent app?
A phone app that does part of a task for you instead of only answering: it plans and carries out a task in several steps, or takes actions in other services for you, such as booking, sending or scheduling.
Is ChatGPT an AI agent app?
This site does not list household-name flagship apps, so we have not assessed it. As a rule, an app counts as an agent only for the parts where it carries out the task, not where it answers or drafts text for you to use.
How many AI agent apps are there for iPhone and Android?
We don’t count the whole market. Of the 74 apps listed here as of Nov 5, 2026, 29 of 74 (39%) are agents by their developers’ description; the rest are assistants.
Numbers on this page are counted from the apps listed on this site as of Nov 5, 2026, not the whole app store. See all the numbers.
