An AI assistant answers and suggests, and you carry out the task. An AI agent plans the task in several steps or carries it out for you, for example by booking, sending or adding to your calendar. Neither is better in general: they suit different jobs and need different amounts of trust.
Side by side
| AI assistant | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Answers, explains, suggests, drafts | Plans and carries out the task |
| Who does the last step | You | The app, sometimes after you confirm |
| Access it usually needs | Often none beyond what you type or share | Often another account: calendar, email, bookings, payments |
| What can go wrong | A wrong answer you might act on | A wrong action taken for you |
| What to check first | Where its answers come from | Confirmation step, access, cost, how to undo |

The same task, two ways
Take “sort out a dentist appointment next week”. An assistant can tell you which times are free in your calendar and draft a message to the clinic; you send it and add the event. An agent that acts on your behalf can send the request and add the confirmed time to your calendar itself, ideally after showing you what it is about to do.
Which one to pick
- Pick an assistant when you want ideas or explanations, when mistakes would be costly, or when you don’t want to connect other accounts.
- Pick an agent when the task is repetitive and the steps are clear, and when the app lets you review or confirm actions you care about.
- In between, apps that plan multi-step tasks do the planning inside the app but leave outside actions to you.
Examples on this site: assistants such as Aira Explorer, Answer.AI and Babbel; agents that act on your behalf such as AIApply, Circle and Gondola.
Spotting the difference in a listing
Store descriptions often call everything an “AI agent”. Look for what the app does at the end of the task: does it hand you a suggestion, or does it complete something in another service? On this site each app’s level is shown on its card and page, with the developer’s own words as the source. See What is an AI agent app? for the three levels.
Quick answers
What is the difference between an AI agent and an AI assistant?
An assistant answers and suggests, and you do the task. An agent plans the task in several steps or carries it out for you, for example by booking, sending or adding to your calendar.
Is an AI assistant worse than an AI agent?
No. They do different jobs. An assistant keeps every action in your hands; an agent saves steps but needs more trust and more checking.
